Spain and Portugal are about to be more distant as the Portuguese Government starts to charge a toll on the Algarve motorway from December 8. The cash-strapped Portuguese Government needs the money from the toll on the A-22. Discounts are available for locals on the Algarve, with ten free trips for locals and businesses, followed by a 15% discount. But tourists and foreigners will be hit for the fill price which will be 77 € for cars 50 € toll and 27 hire charge for the equipment, while lorry drivers will find themselves paying 127 €. For that charge you have access to the road for 90 days, but any money not used is simply lost. Some in Portugal have considered the charge ‘unjust’ and claim that it could put tourism on the Algarve in danger. In Spain some think people will look for alternative routes, while locals in Huelva consider that the measure will create a barrier to economic development in Andalucía and the Algarve.
